When Daniel Joyner walked onto the America’s Got Talent stage in 2016, it was easily one of the biggest audiences he had ever faced.
Daniel was only 17 years old and came from the small town of Alamo, Tennessee.
Before AGT, most of his performances had been in much smaller settings.
Now he was standing in front of Simon Cowell, Heidi Klum, Mel B and Howie Mandel — with thousands of people watching.
The nerves were obvious.
Then the music started.
He Chose an Old Soul Classic
Daniel performed “Try a Little Tenderness,” the song famously associated with Otis Redding.
It was an interesting choice for someone his age.
Instead of choosing a current pop song, Daniel leaned into an older soul style.
At the beginning, he looked somewhat stiff and cautious.
Even the judges noticed it.
But as the song continued, Daniel started loosening up.
His voice grew stronger.
His confidence increased.
And the audience began responding.
The Performance Kept Building
The biggest change happened as Daniel became more comfortable.
At first, he looked like a nervous teenager trying to survive his biggest audition.
A little later, he was moving with the music and showing much more personality.
Heidi Klum said she had been slightly worried at the beginning because he seemed nervous, but felt he became much more comfortable once he started singing.
Simon Cowell also praised Daniel’s voice and said he was impressed by what he heard.
The crowd responded with a standing ovation.
Four Yes Votes
The judges still had some advice for him.
Mel B felt he needed to loosen up more.
Simon wanted to see him step further outside his comfort zone.
But all four judges agreed on one thing:
The voice was worth another chance.
Howie — Yes.
Mel B — Yes.
Heidi — Yes.
Simon — Yes.
Daniel moved on to Judge Cuts.
He Came Back More Confident
For Judge Cuts, Daniel returned with “Feeling Good.”
This time, the judges noticed a difference almost immediately.
He looked more confident.
He moved more naturally.
And he seemed to have taken their earlier advice seriously.
Simon specifically praised the improvement in his confidence and stage presence.
That performance earned Daniel a place in the Quarterfinals.
His Journey Reached the Live Shows
Daniel later performed “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” by Queen during the live Quarterfinals.
By then, he had gone from a nervous teenager facing his biggest audience to performing live on national television.
The judges had mixed feedback about the song choice, and Daniel ultimately did not receive enough public votes to reach the Semifinals.
Still, his AGT experience had already changed how he saw his future.
Daniel later said the competition confirmed that music was something he wanted to continue pursuing.
Sometimes the Growth Is the Real Story
Daniel’s first audition is memorable because the improvement happens during the performance itself.
He starts nervous.
He looks stiff.
Then the voice settles in.
The confidence grows.
And by the end, the audience is standing.
For a 17-year-old performing in front of the biggest crowd of his life, that transformation may have mattered just as much as the four yes votes.
